Steve Rubel at Stockholm's Disruptive Media Conference
Steve Rubel kicked off this morning’s Disruptive Media Conference in Stockholm, which I attended.
What I liked most about Steve’s presentation was the way he underlined that companies have to be ubiquitous to negotiate the current media climate.
It’s not enough to have a good website. You need to be participating on social media networks like Twitter, Facebook and (perhaps) MySpace.
Be Like Starbucks. Be everywhere!
Steve pointed to Starbucks as a great example of a US company that is using the web and social media to build its brand.
“You could hear the cheers when they [Starbucks] introduced free WiFi into their stores,” Steve said.
Giving WiFi away, participating on Twitter, encouraging people to talk to Starbucks, talk about Starbucks builds their brand.
Social Media isn’t just for corporations.
I can see where, say, schools in Stockholm could be using Twitter to talk about the work they’re doing; drive students to free resources posted on, say, YouTube, etc as a way of marketing themselves.
The senior high school market (gymnasium) in Stockholm is VERY competitive. And marketing in a recession is expensive. Getting on Twitter, talking, sharing and telling your story is maybe one of the options open to schools.
