Blogging and Crisis Management: Google Finds You

September 10, 2008

The other week I wrote about how the BBC’s contentious documentary, Pedigree Dogs Exposed, had put a lot of breed clubs in the UK under the spotlight. I was concerned how many clubs aren’t using blogs to get their side of the story out there.

As a basset hound breeder myself (my Winnie is literally expecting pups any moment now!) I wrote to the British Basset Hound Club and urged them to put a statement out on their website. Hell, I even offered to help them write one. For free. Unfortunately for them they politely declined my offer and decided to let silence speak. What’s more, whilst the debate has continued to rage on the Net, they’re maintaining their silence.

This is what the site says this morning!

Doing a bit of checking, I discovered that I’m actually ranking quite highly for the search term basset hound documentary and basset hound bbc documentary. What’s more, my good friends at Kennel Houndsbay Basset Hounds, Donna and Jon Saunder’s, have the number #1 hit for those terms (with a statement I helped them write). They realise how important it is to be heard in the discussion.

The point I’m trying to make here is not that I’m an awesome Stockholm-based copywriter, or that I have some magical SEO (search engine optimization) skills; I’m showing that weblogs are incredibly useful crisis management tools. A well-coded blog that pushes all the right SEO-buttons is an invaluable tool for getting your message across, and telling your side of the story whether you’re a basset hound breeder, a writer, Swedish business or Tom, Dick or Harriet.

Don’t just take my word for it. Ask Google!
