Want to communicate your message effectively online? Build a tribe like Apple.
Well, that’s what I was left thinking yesterday amidst the launch of the iPad yesterday.
For months there’s been discussion on blogs, forums and Twitter about just what Steve Jobs was going to present to the world yesterday. Even my favourite newspapers, The Times and The Guardian, were getting in on the act, caught up by the excitement as they chatted incessantly about the new device with readers up until the moment of release.
What’s clear is that Steve Jobs and Co have a very powerful tribe out there. Just the mere whisper of a new product and the fanboys, brand ambassadors and techies are out there talking online about what’s coming.
At one point yesterday everyone in my Twitter stream seemed to be referring to the iPad – or Paddan (as everyone in Sweden seemed to be calling it).
The hyperbole of the title of this blog post aside, I’m actually being quite serious here. Look at how powerful a tribe of brand ambassadors hooked up to social media can be in getting the word out about your product.
Sure, if the iPad fails to deliver on the promise of the initial announcement, you can bet the tribe will waver. But as the history of Apple shows, there will still be ambassadors out there championing it, just like some still love the Cube (remember that one!).
How Are You Building Your Tribe?
- Are you delivering absolute quality and innovation?
- Do you you introduce drama and spectacle into the launch of new products or services?
- Are you giving away cool videos people can embed on their blog, Facebook Wall, etc, that will drive your brand onwards? (I’ve seen the iPad video on 15 blogs already today!)
- Have you got a clear message everyone can grasp?
The release of the iPad wasn’t a game changer; it was a brand playing its tribe to the perfection of an orchestra.
Even on a micro scale, we should learn from that.
