What does Twitter Search say about you?

What does Twitter Search say about you?

Standard thinking says that Google is the front page of your business website. Ranking at the top of search engine results will drive traffic to your webiste; lounging on page two or three won’t bring you anything. So, yes, on the whole I’d have to agree that this is pretty much the case.

There’s a new kid on the block, though: Twitter Search.

Even here at miniscule www.jonbuscall.com I’ve seen Twitter quickly become the second largest source of referrals since October when I clambered aboard the Twitter Train.

Clearly, some users are getting value out of searching social content.

Steve Rubel notes that Compete.com is saying that Twitter Search has grown

more than 400% in the last six months.

Get on Twitter

First and foremost, if you’re a business get on Twitter – and quickly. You should be tweeting your special offers, deals and so on. For example, if you’re a lunch restaurant, tweet the specials of the day. Better still, offer a 10% discount to the first five people that retweet the specials.

Pretty soon you should have a following who know it’s important to follow what you tweet because you benefit their network.

Monitor What People Are Saying

Twitter Search means it is very simple to track what people are saying about your brand (and your competitors). This information can help your crisis management; it can also give you leverage to provide something your competitors aren’t doing. For example, imagine you follow the term “hosting”. If someone tweets a complaint about their web hosting company and you then offer then a 10% discount if they move to your services, you could make a sale. Offer something even better and they might just become a brand ambassador for you and recommend you to their network of followers.

The Benefits of Twitter

So just as Google has been a key factor in influencing whether people look at you, Twitter is a channel that is important for your business. It provides you with the chance to:

  • talk to customers
  • promote your services
  • build better relationships with existing and prospective customers
  • generate traffic
  • get people to recommend you
  • monitor what others are saying about you
  • get your brand known outside your local network
