Writing Effective Email

This is an online talk I’ve put up for a client in Oslo. Thought I’d share it with you.

It’s taken from some of the work I do on writing digital English. I’m fascinated by how we can communicate better as businesses through the digital medium. In this case I focus on email.

Obviously, it’s not like giving a talk when you’ve got paralinguistic information to help hold your audience’s attention. I was also speaking without a script. In fact, the voiceover was done on the fly whilst the dogs were munching bones in the background.

    Hi,
I'm a student teacher from Singapore. May I use your video as part of an introduction of a lesson designed to teach students how to write E-mail?

    Sure, no problem.
  • I think that your best point was how easily we all get lost...I don't know how many times I have 'lost' an email, just because the subject was poor or it didn't capture my attention.

Great idea to add the brackets of the main idea at the end of the subject. I will definitely be trying that one next time I send out an email!

Oh, and no one would ever know that this was recorded on the fly - it is extremely well done!

Thanks Kirsten. I appreciate your comments. I got the idea for the brackets from Gawker's RSS feed actually. I found it so much easier to find what I was looking for when it was marked with [key subject].

As for this being done on the fly, well it was. Scout's honour! One take on a Friday afternoon. Just didn't fancy having to write a long email explaining everything. It was easier to talk my way through a presentation I had already done.
