Your Website Needs a Focus Group

When was the last time you talked to people about your company’s website? I mean really talked? Face-to-face?

It’s very easy to get carried away tweaking, writing, search engine optimising your website. Sometimes, however, what you really need to do is sit down with a couple of people and just talk things through.

I recently ran a focus group for one of my clients and discovered that 16 year olds, for the most part, have no idea what the RSS icon stands for. Or what RSS is for that matter?

It might have taken me a lot longer to figure this out if I’d just concentrated on looking at the stats for signing up for the RSS feed. Or tried resizing and or replacing the icon.

Communication Strategy

When working out how best to use your website or how to get the most out of your business blog, a sit down with your target group is priceless. Whether it’s a chat over coffee or actually watching someone surf your website on a laptop plonked down in front of them, you get a different perspective and this can be vital in fine-tuning your site.

Of course, there are times when you have to decide to go your own way and perhaps educate your audience on how to use something like RSS or newsletters, but even this can be turned to your benefit. By showing others how to get the most out of the Net and online tools, you may also benefit as your value as a source for valuable information rises.
